본 연구는 청소년의 디지털 성폭력 피해 경험을 디지털 미디어 공간의 젠더 질서라는 맥락 안에서 살펴보기 위해 디지털 성폭력 피해 경험이 있는 청소년 4명의 이야기를 내 러티브 탐구 방법론을 활용하여 분석했다. 그 과정에서 발견한 것들은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 청소년들에게 디지털 미디어 공간은 젠더 폭력의 위험성이 있는 곳임과 동시에 정체성을 형성하고 관계를 만들며 저항과 학습을 하는 장소이다. 둘째, 연구 참여자들은 온라인 공간에서 살아남기 위해 자신의 디지털 성폭력 경험을 사회구조적 문제로 객관화하거나 페미니스트에 대한 공격 혹은 더럽고 불쾌한 일로 여김으로써 폭력으로부터의 손상을 최소화하고자 했다. 셋째, 이러한 생존 전략으로서의 피해 경험 해석은 자원과 네트워크가 있을 때만 가능하며 고립된 조건에 있었던 청소년에게는 어려운 일이었다. 넷째, 청소년들의 적극적 해석을 통한 생존 전략에도 불구하고 디지털 성폭력이 오프라인에서의 신변의 위협으로 연결될 때, 이는 두려움과 불안의 원인이 된다. 따라서 청소년들이 온라인 공간에서 살아남기 위해 선택한 전략들은 스스로를 젠더 폭력의 위험으로부터 안전하게 지키기에는 불완전한 것이다. 이러한 연구 결과는 청소년 디지털 성폭력 문제의 해결을 위해 온라인 공간의 젠더 질서에 대한 풍부하고 깊이 있는 고찰이 필요함을 시사한다. 그리고 이는 청소년들이 성적 주체로서 상상하고 실천할 수 있는 사회로 나아가기 위한 제도적, 정책적 노력이 필요함을 함의하는 것이기도 하다.

This article examines the adolescents’ experiences of sexual violence in digital media space in the context of gender order. It employs a narrative inquiry to analyze the stories of four youths who experienced digital sexual violence. This study found the following: First, the digital media space is space where youths are at risk of gender-based violence, while simultaneously is a space to form identities, build relationships, resist and learn. Second, the research participants objectify their experience of digital sexual assault as a socio-structural problem, an attack on feminists, or something raunchy and unpleasant. It is a survival strategy they employ to minimize the damage of the violence. Third, only those with available resources and networks can objectify their experience, whereas those disconnected from the discourse cannot. Fourth, digital sexual violence develops into a source of fear when it poses physical threats offline. On these accounts, adolescents‘ survival strategies in a digital space tend to be inadequate to provide safety from violence. These findings suggest that gender order in digital space needs to be carefully considered to address the issue of digital sexual violence in adolescents. They also imply that institutional and policy-related efforts are required for our society to imagine adolescents as subjects who can express their sexuality.
