근대 매체와 기생 셀러브리티의 형성 : ‘공적 친밀성’ 개념을 중심으로 저자 서지영
이 연구는 18세기 이후 서구에서 형성된 근대적 셀러브리티 문화가 내포하는 여러 사회적 의제들에 주목하면서 20세기 초 한국의 역사적 맥락 속에서 셀러브리티 형상이 구현되는 양상을 탐색한다. 특히 공적 공간에서 주변화되거나 배제되었던 여성들이 셀러브리티 문화 속으로 이입되는 지점에 초점을 두고, 조선시대 예악정치의 일환으로 공적 영역에 전문예인으로 배치되었던 기생들이 20세기 초 극장 무대에서 근대적 형태의 예능인으로 재편되고 1930년대 대중예술의 장에서 셀러브리티 형상으로 재현되는 지점을 검토한다. 이를 위해 본고는 1910년대 『매일신보』와 1930년대 『삼천리』, 『모던일본 조선판』(1939/1940) 등의 대중잡지를 대상으로 근대 매체가 기생과 대중 독자들 사이에 친밀성을 구축하는 다양한 재현 전략들을 분석한다. 이를 통해 사적인 것을 공적으로 전시하고 유통시키는 ‘공적 친밀성’이 셀러브리티 형성의 핵심적 메카니즘으로 작동하였던 정황을 밝힌다. 본 연구는 근대 시기 기생의 존재론적 전환을 탐색하면서 ‘공적 여성들’의 새로운 위치짓기를 드러낼 뿐 아니라 식민지 조선의 특수한 조건 속에서 배태된 셀러브리티 문화를 통해 식민지 공공성에 대한 새로운 질문들을 제기하고자 한다. This article explores the embodiment of celebrity figures in the historical context of early twentieth-century Korea, with a focus on the social agendas of modern celebrity culture, which originated in West Europe since the eighteenth century. Paying attention to the moment that women who had been marginalized or excluded in public realms began to enter celebrity culture, this study examines how kisaeng, who were employed in public sectors as music and dance performers in the premodern period, were reorganized as modern forms of performers on theater stages in the early twentieth century Korea and located themselves as figures of celebrity in the site of popular arts in the 1930s’ Korea. This article analyzes the diverse representational strategies of modern media, including the daily news Maeil Sinbo in the 1910s, the mass magazine Samcholli in the 1930s, and the Korean edition of Japanese magazine Modern Japan in 1939 and 1940, that facilitated intimacy between Kisaeng and the general public, and through this, it demonstrates ‘public intimacy,’ which refers to the display and circulation of the private in public arenas, as the core mechanism of celebrity formation.
