Revisiting Stuart Hall and Raymond Williams: Review of the British Cultural Studies Classic Translation
2014년 2월 스튜어트 홀이 사망했을 때 국내 일간지들은 대대적으로 이 소식을 전하면서, ‘대처리즘’ 용어의 고안자이자 영국 문화연구의 ‘대부’, ‘기념비적 저작’ 등의 용어로 그의 생애를 기렸다. 보수 일간지까지 진보적 학자의 삶에 경이를 표한 것은 이례적인 사건이었다. 그만큼 홀이 한국의 학계에 미친 영향은 크다. 그러나 실제로 홀이 학계의 연구에 인용되고 활용되는 양상은 뜻밖이다. 극소수의 연구를 제외하면 영국 문화연구 역시 국내에서는 피상적으로 선별적 수준에서 언급되고 인용될 뿐 주로 유명세로 소비되고 있다.
영국 문화연구의 피상적인 수용 양상은 고전의 충실한 소개와 번역 작업의 필요성이 절실함을 보여준다. 난해하고 방대한 작업에 대한 통독과 맥락화 과정은 생략되곤 한다. 유명하지만 읽히지는 않는 이론을 국내 여건에 맞게 소화하기란 어렵기 때문이다. 임영호 교수는 스튜어트 홀과 레이먼드 윌리엄스의 ‘원저작’을 체계적으로 번역, 소개하는 작업을 꾸준히 진행해왔다. 이 장기적인 작업은 ‘번역’이자 이론의 ‘맥락화’, 국내 상황에 주는 ‘함의’를 모두 아우르는 과정일 수밖에 없다. 이 강연은 이러한 작업 과정에서 얻게 된 소회와 작업의 의미, 장기적 작업 계획 등에 대한 소개와 의견 공유에 목적을 둔다.
When Stuart Hall passed away in February 2014, Korean newspapers extensively reported the news, honoring him as “the founding father” and “monumental figure” of British cultural studies and the inventor of the term “Thatcherism”. It was unusual for conservative newspapers to pay tribute to the life of a progressive scholar, and it indicates the significant impact Hall had on Korean academia. However, it is surprising how Hall is actually cited and used in Korean academic research. Excluding a few studies, British cultural studies are superficially mentioned and cited at a selective level in Korea and are primarily consumed for their fame.
The superficial acceptance of British cultural studies in Korea highlights the urgent need for faithful translations and introductions of classic works. The process of reading and contextualizing complex and extensive works is often disregarded because it is difficult to incorporate widely-known but unread theories in domestic conditions. Professor Young Ho Im has been continuously translating and introducing the original works of Stuart Hall and Raymond Williams systematically, as part of a long-term project that encompasses the translation, contextualization, and implications of theories in the Korean context. This lecture aims to share Professor Im’s thoughts on the meaning of his work, the insights obtained in the process, and further plans.
