    When Stuart Hall passed away in February 2014, Korean newspapers extensively reported the news, honoring him as “the founding father” and “monumental figure” of British cultural studies and the inventor of the term “Thatcherism”. It was unusual for conservative newspapers to pay tribute to the life of a progressive scholar, and it indicates the significant impact Hall had on Korean academia. However, it is surprising how Hall is actually cited and used in Korean academic research. Excluding a few studies, British cultural studies are superficially mentioned and cited at a selective level in Korea and are primarily consumed for their fame.<\/p>\n

    The superficial acceptance of British cultural studies in Korea highlights the urgent need for faithful translations and introductions of classic works. The process of reading and contextualizing complex and extensive works is often disregarded because it is difficult to incorporate widely-known but unread theories in domestic conditions. Professor Young Ho Im has been continuously translating and introducing the original works of Stuart Hall and Raymond Williams systematically, as part of a long-term project that encompasses the translation, contextualization, and implications of theories in the Korean context.
