    Since the beginnings of scholarship examining the Korean Wave in the early 2000s, academic analysis has tended to focus upon the popularity of this phenomenon in proximate East Asian markets, later expanding to the Euro-American context. In the last ten years however, there has been increasing attention to the Southeast Asian region, as this geo-political area becomes more economically prominent on a global level and conglomerates under the rubric of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). Along with other East Asian nations, Korea seeks to solidify its political and economic relationship with this resource-rich area of the world, and Hallyu becomes an important part of building such a relationship. However, the cultural and economic diversity across the ASEAN region has problematized the appeal of Hallyu, while Hallyu scholarship is often overly celebratory in its assessment of overseas popularity. This talk seeks to examine and assess the barriers and problems that have faced Hallyu exports, with particular focus upon Southeast Asia. In this way, it provides a significant overview of the cultural relationship between these many nations, while also highlighting the importance of scholarship that addresses such problematic issues.<\/span><\/p>\n
